Problem & Solution 🔍️

Problem to solve

TripAdvisor is one of the best places to look for reviews before booking for a place. The problem is, often reviews are too harsh compared to the reality or are outdated which means they’re unreliable.

Solution to build

You could build a review credibility scoring platform where users rate the usefulness of reviews and reviewers and uses sentimental analysis to understand the feel of the review. This platform would work as a Chrome extension or you could create a standalone websites that easily shows all the content from different reviews.

Target audience 🙋

  • Travelers - People often traveling will be interested in receiving high quality reviews for the places they want to visit reducing the guessing.

  • Travel Platforms - TripAdvisor, Booking, Yelp, etc. might also be interested in integrating this platform in their systems to provide a better filtering.

Core features 💪

MVP (Must have)

  1. Sentiment and Context analysis - To make this idea really worth the system should be able to contextualize the review in terms of date, period of the year, etc. this would help the system understand better why’s the review like that (and ideally provide better feedback to the business)

  2. User driven review score - Make it easy to upvote or downvote a review or a report generated by the system. This should help your system improve with user feedback and improve the reliability

  3. Browser extension - To make it easier at first, focus on building a Chrome Extension that automatically pops up when the user is reading at reviews from a supported platform

Optional features (Cool stuff you could add later)

  • Reward top reviewers

  • Review summaries

  • Business-side analytics - Provide the business detailed analytics from what the user are saying contextualized

  • Multi-sync - Sync reviews from different sources to make the infos more reliable and high quality

How to make money 💸

Revenue model

As always, it is best to have multiple income streams to ensure you earn even if one goes off. For this SaaS I would create a cheap subscription with custom pricing. You could offer a daily pass, a custom day pass (with variable prices) and a yearly subscription for frequent travelers. You could also think of introducing an ad-driven freemium model where free users see non-intrusive ads in exchange for accessing basic features. Also, you could think of adding a paid campaign for businesses to be featured on the extension if they have better reviews than another business and make them pay for each click you bring them.

Revenue streams:

  • SaaS Subscription - 1 day, X days, 1 year to access free of ad version and premium features

  • Freemium with Ads

  • Ad campaigns

  • API Access to the platform - To make it possible for TripAdvisor and others to scrape your website

How to get the idea known 📢

  1. Reddit and Travel forums: I got this idea by looking on Travel subreddits so it seems travelers actually need a solution like this. Talking about this idea in these subreddit (without feeling spammy) is probably the best way to advertise it

  2. Influencer collaboration: Focus on micro influencers with an highly engaged community and ask them to promote your SaaS

  3. Browser extension marketplace: If you launch the SaaS as a browser extension you could eventually get featured in google’s marketplace which would increase visibility

  4. Referral program: (This is my favorite) - Make user want to share your SaaS with others to get free months or a digital product for free for each friend they refer. This would spread your business among people who are interested in your solution

  5. SEO-optimized articles: Write articles about traveling and plug in your own system in the articles to make people interested

Why this idea is cool (and why it’s not) 🧐

Cool aspects

The system solves a simple problem pretty much any travel have faced when looking for reviews. AND people on reddit are already talking about the possible need of a solution like this which would make it a perfect fit. Also, this idea could easily scale from a B2C to a B2B bringing a higher income in the future.

The goal of the B2C for this idea would then be to have the content (and the self-evaluating system) to then “sell” the infos to the business.

Meh aspects

Building a user base could be challenging, as travelers might initially be hesitant to adopt a new tool on top of existing review platforms. Convincing travel businesses to invest in analytics features might take time, as they may be slow to recognize the value.

How could this idea miserably fail? 📉

These mistakes could make your SaaS miserably fail, and you don’t want to…

  1. Revenue concentration

If you over-rely on a single or limited set of revenue streams (e.g., subscriptions, ads) can leave you vulnerable if customer preferences change or advertising regulations shift.

So, make sure to have multiple income streams and offer different subscriptions tiers

  1. Market and tech dependancies

This idea at the moment relies mainly on TripAdvisor, Google reviews or Yelp. Which is not a problem until they change their terms of service making it hard for you to use that content or to scrape their websites.

To overcome it, you could build your own reviewing system and place yourself not just for “reviews” but for “high quality, accurate reviews” and give the possibility to users to write the reviews from your extension

  1. Tech dependancies

I’ve shared this idea as a Chrome extension BUT make sure to make it available for other browsers and to offer your own website and mobile app. This means more work for you to build it (I know…) but it allows you to stay free from limitations google extensions might have and ensure you have your users

Make sure of… ✔️

  • Make sure you can scrape all reviews easily and doesn’t go against Terms of Services as this could slow down your building process

  • Validate that there is a significant demand for better review credibility scoring through surveys or interviews - I’ve done this through GummySearch on your side but make sure to the validation on your side to not waste time and money

Discuss this idea with AI 🤖

If you like this idea but have more questions, copy and paste the following block in your favorite AI and start asking questions.

I want to build a platform that enhances the reliability of online travel reviews by scoring their credibility. The platform empowers users to rate the usefulness of reviews and reviewers, while optionally integrating sentiment analysis to assess the tone and context of reviews. This platform can be accessed as a Chrome extension or a standalone website that consolidates content from multiple review platforms. My target audience are Travelers: Individuals who want to make better travel decisions by identifying reliable and helpful reviews, Travel Platforms: Companies like TripAdvisor, Booking, and Yelp that want to improve the quality of reviews displayed on their platforms, Travel Businesses: Hotels, restaurants, and tour operators looking to understand genuine customer feedback and improve their services.
I aim to monetize through subscriptions: Offer daily, custom-duration, and yearly passes for frequent travelers to access advanced features and an ad-free experience. Freemium Model: Provide basic features for free with non-intrusive ads.
Paid Campaigns: Allow businesses with strong reviews to feature their services for higher visibility, with pay-per-click pricing. API Access: Offer data scraping and credibility scoring APIs to platforms like TripAdvisor and Google Reviews.
